Design trends at Nordic fair Formland: during and after the pandemic

Design fair Formland was the first physical fair to take place during the pandemic in the Scandinavian countries. To be more exact, here in Denmark.

It takes place in Herning, on the Danish peninsula, just 30 km from my home. I decided to visit it as I usually do almost every year.

The pandemic and quarantine have been the reason for the changes we made in our home, the way we decorate, and our lifestyle in general. As a result, the fair organized seminars and conferences with related topics such as:

  • Post-corona forbrugeradfærd: Post-corona consumer behavior
  • The future of family and consequences for design
  • Coronaforbrug og kriseadfærd: Corona consumption and crisis behavior
  • Retail Futures: Crisis, Community, and Creativity
  • Life after corona – what will be the trends

Nature and natural materials

Wood, clay, textiles, and vegetable fibers are the natural materials in different brands of accessories and furniture. Bringing elements of nature into the home and as inspiration in decorative elements allows us to maintain that contact with it.

Crafts and cultural heritage

Although there is still a commitment to contemporary design, the influence of craftsmanship and its traditional techniques are a source of inspiration to design considering the cultural heritage of different parts of the world. Here it is important to understand and respect the patterns and designs of the different cultures of the world, allowing a correct interpretation of them.

A special mention on the blog will always be the stores or brands that bet on world handicrafts, in this case from Ghana and Burkina Faso. Hammershus Fairtrade produces and imports fair trade handicrafts from these countries that are made by women from vulnerable groups.

Minimalism and home comfort

This trend invites us to connect with a more minimalist decoration that seeks comfort in our lifestyle and that includes the decoration of our home. It is here that Nordic style serves as inspiration since it is characterized by its minimalist design where the word “hygge” is its primary element.

Columbine brand was founded in 2002 with beautiful candles made by hand in Israel and Egypt and imported into Scandinavia. Now its catalog of decorative accessories is much broader and does not lose the elegance of Danish design. I was fascinated by the materials and the perfect warm color palette for fall and winter.
