Ayacucho tapestries and visiting Artisan Emilio Fernández Quispe

Emilio Fernández Quispe is an artist and craftsman, born on July 20, 1964, in Vinchos, Ayacucho. He and his family create textiles, embroidery, altarpieces, Ayacucho tapestries, cushions, and ceramics in a traditional way in their workshop “Manos Andinas Perú“, located in Lurín, Lima.

Don Emilio learned to use the loom as family inheritance and the teachings of his father. When he was 17 years old, he migrated from his hometown to Lima for an opportunity to work or study. But above all because of the danger that he ran due to the terrorist movements that hit Ayacucho

His art expresses the creativity, manual skill, and cultural-artistic sensitivity of the artisan of that region. Which through his work gives life to beliefs, traditions, and experiences that characterize the people of Ayacucho.

He told us that to make the loom it must go through a long process such as: choosing the material to be used, spinning, twisting, weaving, washing, drying, dyeing with natural dyes, llito (small balls of wool), the preparation and placement of the warp, weaving, and finishing.

Thus, from this great story and creation process of Ayacucho tapestries, we seek to design in collaboration with Don Emilio. Therefore, you are invited to learn about this collaborative design soon. Are you ready?
