Cultural heritage and textiles in Chinchero, Cusco
After a few years, I traveled to my dear country Peru with my little Thiago to visit the family and Cusco with my mother.
During those four days in Cusco, we learned more about our culture and its traditional fabrics at the Apu Antasaqa Artisanal Association. This association is located in the district of Chinchero in the province of Urubamba, which is 30km (18 miles) from the city of Cusco and almost 3800 meters above sea level (12 400 feet). They welcomed us with a muña tea we needed from the day we arrived in the city of Cusco.
This association maintains the millenary heritage of weft and warp techniques for the elaboration of its textiles, as well as the use of natural dyes. Another essential detail is the use of traditional Andean iconography and the Chinchero community itself.
How not to marvel at the designs and colors, in addition to the natural materials and processes they use to make their textiles. As expected, I brought some of these pieces to our home in Denmark.
Currently, the Apu Antasaqa association is also a community rural tourism venture. It thus promotes culture, customs, and traditions to tourists who wish to stay in their family home in Chinchero. An opportunity for lovers of experiential tourism to support these artisan communities.
